One Taste: Embracing Difference, Embodying Equity – A Virtual Dharma Talk (ONLINE)
With Lopön Karla Jackson-Brewer, M.S.
January 16, 2023
The experience of ‘One Taste,’ can be found in Vajrayana Buddhism. Practicing ‘One Taste’ in a tantric feast moves us away from our habitual discriminatory behaviors. So frequently, we approach or react to events, people, and objects in our world from 3 perspectives: 1) I like it, and I want more; 2) I don’t like it and I want less or want to get away from it; and 3) I am indifferent to it. Responding to things in our lives from these 3 perspectives can place us on a never-ending cycle of tension, struggle, and dissatisfaction.
The practice of ‘One Taste’ has the potential to cut through dualistic thought, allowing practitioners to rest in equanimity. We can experience the presence of being present. The Tantric view recognizes the luminosity that is present in all beings and all phenomena at every moment. The experience of ‘One Taste’ can increase our development of Bodhicitta, and our expression of compassion in the world.
Can we apply the Buddhist practice of ‘One Taste’ in our daily lives to move us into action when it comes to racial equity? How can we simultaneously acknowledge, honor, and appreciate difference, while manifesting more space for flourishing of racial equity? Are you curious?
Then join me on January 16, 2023 for Tara Mandala’s annual Martin Luther King Dharma Talk. Let’s see what steps we can take to truly embrace difference and embody equity.
