Building and Sustaining Sangha in These Tumultuous Times
With Lopön Karla Jackson-Brewer MS
January 19, 2025
On the eve of the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birth and in the first month of what may be a very challenging year around the world, join Lopön Karla Jackson-Brewer as she speaks to the need of strengthening our commitment to a Buddhist path, and building strongly connected Sangha. Dr. King spent his life fighting for social justice and equity. He saw that work as requiring both individual and collective transformation. He valued community. Likewise, the Buddha offered a path to relieve the suffering in the world, and he too saw the value of community.
Sangha, our community, supports us in practice and in life. When we raise Bodhicitta, offering compassion to others, can we also truly appreciate all of those we think of as our Vajra family? Are we willing to reach across race, class, age, sexual orientation and gender differences to authentically be welcoming, and share a heartfelt connection? Will we really take the time to see each other, know each other, and hear each other?
This talk will provide the space for us to collectively envision a richly diverse community, where all are truly welcome, and engaged in the transformative experience of Buddhist practice. Let’s be part of the continuation of Dr. King’s legacy.
