As Erik Jampa explains, Tibetan Medicine “developed out of a fluid and dynamic exchange.” This came at a significant moment in time and in the world. Today, Tibetan Medicine supports our efforts to “actively engage” more with life, and offers us a leap forward into personal, cultural, and societal development.

In this video, Erik Jampa explores some of the revolutionary aspects of Sowa Rigpa.

Sowa Rigpa (གསོ་བ་རིག་པ་), commonly known as Traditional Tibetan Medicine, is based on the teachings of 12th century enlightened yogi-physician, Yuthok Yönten Gönpo. Yuthok’s work is experiencing a revival in the modern world, thanks to the tireless work of Dr. Nida Chenagtsang.

Beyond The Silk Road

The great gift of Erik Jampa’s presentation of Sowa Rigpa, is through his integration of history, myth, and scientific information. Below, please enjoy a transcript excerpt from his recent video offering:

“The silk roads were the ancient internet … and medical knowledge was being shared across many different traditions and embedded into the indigenous systems of Tibetan medicine, even before Yuthok’s time. But then when he came along he had the benefit of having access to some really incredible translations of Ayurvedic materials, which was a key inspiration for his work. And it really is akin to what you would find with folks like Leonardo da Vinci, who had access to a massive amount of information and who spent their life directly engaging with it, but also deepening it, through individual contemplation and spiritual practice, at least in the case of Yuthok.”

ABOUT THE RETREAT TEACHER

Erik Jampa Andersson

Erik Jampa Andersson is a practitioner and instructor of Sowa Rigpa (Traditional Tibetan Medicine) and the Yuthok Nyingthik. He is one of the few westerners to have completed a comprehensive education in the Gyu-zhi (Four Medical Tantras), as well as practical training in Tibetan herbalism, clinical treatment, and astrology. He established his clinical practice in Los Angeles in 2017, but has since moved across the pond to England, where he is now the director of Shrīmālā Healing Arts and resident teacher at Sorig Khang London.

A longtime fixture in the Tara Mandala community, Erik first met the Dharma at age 13 while living in nearby Durango, CO, where a young interest in spirituality led him to begin sitting with a teen meditation and study group at the Durango Dharma Center. After a particularly moving experience reading the life story of Padmasambhava, Erik decided that he wanted to be a Nyingmapa, and began searching for a guru. It wasn’t long before he was led to his heart’s home at Tara Mandala, and he has been a devoted student of Lama Tsultrim’s ever since. … Read more »
