“Leaving everything in naked void-awareness, recite the six-syllable mantra.”
~ Patrul Rinpoche, from the text The Heart Treasure of The Enlightened Ones
These teachings will be based on the original text, The Heart Treasure of The Enlightened Ones by Patrul Rinpoche. This text is special in that it points us toward resting our minds in the perfected state, through a variety of contemplations about everyday life, while also continuously reminding us to embody compassion. Patrul Rinpoche does this by encouraging us to cultivate devotion and mantra recitation for Chenrezig – the Buddha of Compassion – which is weaved throughout his exquisite verse.
We recommend this retreat for all levels of practitioners, to assist you with understanding deeper levels of your life, support your meditation, illuminate your devotion and deity practice, and open your heart.
COMPASSION
Patrul Rinpoche and Dilgo Khyentse
Through Patrul Rinpoche’s text we reflect upon Dzogchen as a practice of abandoning all inner and outer activity, and to rest in primordial purity. Dilgo Khyentse’s commentary reminds us that compassion and faith are qualities that keep us on the path, and maintain our love and respect for all beings. He writes:
“Whatever we do, it is the mind that is most important … It is the mind that conceives faith and the mind that conceives doubt; it is the mind that conceives love and the mind that conceives hatred. So look within and check your motivation, for that is what determines whether what you do is positive or negative.”
SIX-SYLLABLE MANTRA
The Mantra of Chenrezig
Patrul Rinpoche’s text refers to the “six-syllable mantra”, which is the famous mantra OM MANI PADME HUM.
In one verse he writes:
“To recognize as the deity whatever forms appear is the crucial point of the development stage; Clinging to appearance as beautiful or ugly is liberated into its own nature. Free of clinging, mind as it appears is the body of Supreme Chenrezi. In the self-liberation of visual experiences, recite the six-syllable mantra.”
For this retreat, we recommend reading Dilgo Khyentse’s Commentary on The Heart Treasure of the Enlightened Ones, which also includes the complete text by Patrul Rinpoche. To browse this item, click here »
