Taking and Waking: Developing Compassion and Wakefulness (online)

With Lopön Polly Ryan, MA, MFT

April 6, 2024

Taking and Waking is a practice that came to Lama Tsultrim Allione spontaneously in retreat. She incorporated this simple, yet transformative practice into her daily life and realized its profound and essential quality. Since then, this practice has become a part of the Magyu: The Mother Lineage Path

Taking and Waking is similar to the practice of Tonglen: taking and giving. In the practice of Tonglen, we take on the suffering of others as we breathe in and give loving kindness and compassion as we breathe out. In Taking and Waking, a practice of absolute Bodhicitta, as we breathe in, we remove the emotional and cognitive veils which are the real cause of suffering and return sentient beings to the union with the ground of being which is ineffable and unfabricated. As we breathe out, this recognition is stabilized.

In this daylong retreat, students will first explore the practice of Tonglen and its basis in aspirational Bodhicitta. Students will then learn the Taking and Waking practice. These practices provide skillful methods practitioners can turn to in a myriad of situations and challenges. They can be offered to support loved ones, worldwide tragedies, and all beings experiencing suffering.

Who Should Attend?

  • This program is open to everyone.
  • Members of the Magyu program are encouraged to attend as an opportunity to refresh their understanding and connection to this practice.
