DHARMA FRIENDS A Tribute to the Dalai Lama

With Megan Mook and Kevin Townley

June 23, 2025

With Megan Mook and Kevin Townley

Dharma Friends is a monthly community gathering hosted by Megan Mook and Kevin Townley at Tibet House, NYC, and Online. Each month features a specific Dharma theme with special guests, including Buddhist teachers, artists, professors, comedians, and musical guests.

Join DHARMA FRIENDS in our only event of the summer as we celebrate and pay tribute to The 14th Dalai Lama, who turns 90 on July 6th. In this extra special Dharma Friends, we’ll explore the Dalai Lama’s extraordinary life story, tracing his birth in Tibet to his exile to India to his role as global activist, spiritual leader, and Nobel Peace Prize Winner. We’ll also explore the history of the institution of the Dalai Lamas, beginning in Mongolia in 1578.

As part of our historical exploration, we’ll pay special attention to the Sixth Dalai Lama who was famous for sneaking out of the Potala in disguise and eventually leaving his formal role as the Dalai Lama to become a wandering Nyingma yogi. Special guest Annie Bien will speak about her forthcoming book, The Magical Adventures of the Sixth Dalai Lama: His Life and Loves, co-authored with Dr. Robert Thurman.

Megan Mook will cap off the evening with a guided compassion meditation in honor of the Dalai Lama’s birthday, followed by an integrative sound meditation with George MacPherson.

Annie Bien is a published poet, English translator of Tibetan Buddhist scriptures with 84000, and author. Her newest forthcoming book, The Magical Adventures of the Sixth Dalai Lama: His Life and Loves, is co-authored with Dr. Robert Thurman. Annie Bein also teaches Buddhism, meditation and Qigong at Tibet House NYC. www.anniebien.com

George MacPherson is an intuitive sound meditation practitioner based in Brooklyn, New York. Having experienced personally the potential impact of sound and vibration as a modality that can lead to heightened awareness, inner exploration, and outer connectedness, George offers sound meditations across New York for one-on-one and group experiences through Sound of the Times.
